Just checked out one of those directors cut / anniverary edition copies of Alien with like five hours of interviews and making of specials on a second DVD in the case. Learned some interesting stuff, Ripley was written as a man, in fact all characters were but the writers were mindful of Fox's rep for pushing woman's empowerment at that time out a note on the script that any of the characters could be women. John Hurt called the chest bursting scene his birthing scene and seemed quite amused by it, I doubt he's had many birthing scenes in his career so one cannot fault him on that.

Gurps Space has a page on this; breaking it into the military team, Star ship crews, Exploration team, The professionals

Military team is basically all "combat monsters" with lots of skill overlap, though it suggests a special forces or commando squad which might include some highly trained specialist

Star ship crews if the ship is small are ideal for PC group with diverse characters. If the ship is large one suggestion is to give each player a couple of PC- high ranking officers who might not leave the ship at all and low ranking enlisted who might.

this morning was the second time I nailed a robo spammer in the process; they usually start 5 threads and I had just deleted five by mycheapnike and then answered some email and was considering posting some ideas. When I got back here there was a new spam log in and it had posted its first thread, I managed to delete its login name before it could post another.

This TV is airing Angry Red Planet today

More of a C grade movie then a B grade but very much in the vein of Star Frontiers, if you can stand to watch it for long.

You, a Vrusk and a hairy Yaz have been cooped up in a rust bucket
of a ship for months now making the Jump from Harm's Way mining base
to the various Rim worlds. Titanium dust is a must on any new colonized planet,
especially for the credits they pay you. Yeah, if they ever get around to paying you.

You have been the co-pilot of this ship for the last 16 months to pay off Drak
for debt owed in his Casino's. If you only would have known that winning 18

Cogito ergo sum; I think therefore I am.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

Just spotted that the Hobbit is likely to be out for Christmas this year, directed by Peter Jackson with several returning cast from LotR. That for sure will make the holiday season merry for me, unless of course this prequel falls prey to the curse of prequels and sucks.

however i do look forward to it and need to wrap up reading The Hobbit with the girls.

though from some internet research it appears that Jackson is making the Hobbit a trillogy so one never knows whats up with that.
