In the 60's Borden foods own Cracker Jacks and propagated the urban myth that it was the nations first snack food sold by its inventor at the Chicago worldvfair.

Truth is the product's name and slogan were invented latter and there is no record of the inventor of Cracker Jack having a stall at the worlds fair. But the myth sounded good.

So what myths do the mega-corps propagate?

these came up in this thread:
    http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/9896

I seem to remember something about Volturnus first being explored by an unmanned probe

I think that a HS 1 hull with an astrogation package, an intended as single use atomic drive- I say single use but that is for this mission- basically its a type A atomic drive with multiple fuel pellets that the robotic AI will use to void jump to the system then land on a planet, despite not getting an overhaul the engine might be used to lift off and land on another planet in the same system.

Close encounter today with Blizzard Pass M1 AD&A solo adventure at used book store and brief walk down memory lane.

Naturally i spent the day considering something similar for SF.

What i came up with is this: starting characters each have a short solo adventure that if the complete links them up at a cargo container where they begin to cooperate. Solo adventures are tailored to a primary skill.

CSS Half Life is a confiscated freighter employed by the Crown of Clarion to dispose of nuclear wastes from the nuclear production side of the economy, medical research and star ship engineering waste (some is classic nuclear waste but much is just contaminated materials. Once a month or as needed the Half Life loads its specially redesigned cargo container and accelerates toward the system's sun. It parks in a safe orbit near the star and points the ship's tail at the star.

Another tidbit from my Assault Scout write-up.  This time dealing with the specifics of depressurizing the ship.  These are specific for the ship but are easily adapted to be general for any ship.

Typical procedure is to fully depressurize the ship prior to any sort of engagement that might involve ship combat.  This is to prevent explosive decompression of the ship or sections of the ship in the event of a hull breach.  By depressurizing the ship in advance crew and repair robots can move freely through the ship as needed.

Working on the Assault Scout Technical Manual for the new assault scout design and wrote up the maintenance robot.  Enjoy.

The Swift class assault scout carries six Mark VI standard Starfleet maintenance robots (SMR-MKVI) that perform general janitorial work on the ship as well as are responsible for helping the engineer with any shipboard maintenance and damage control.

The Warriors of the White Light module came with a very nice floorplan of parts of Clarion Station to use in the adventure. It only had this to say about Clarion Station interior:
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

    The Character:

While digging through an ancient hulk in space, JoeBob finds some clips of video that show a man who's an incredible fighter who has some amazing devices that help him defeat his foes. He thinks it's awesome and sets off to find his adventure in a black cape and a bat-symbol.

    The Question:

Have you ever thought about a martial artist with Bat-Gadgets? How would you design the grapple gun, batarang, the ever-present "omni" gadget in the belt?

    What are your ideas?

Rather than assume all the risk might mega corps and others award contracts to private ship owners to do exploration work?

The contractor would have to write a proposal invovling their ship's abilities (primarily to land and take off) and the crew expertese. There would be a money award up front for the contract winner to get started and a payout with bonuses for certain things upon return and verification of data. Contractor assumes all the risk.
