Any suggestions on some good fiction in the vein of SF?  I know there is some fiction penned by some of us, and I plan on checking that out.  But, I am interested also in any other sci-fi people have read with a Frontier feel.

I have read the Honor Harrington books when I was deep into Traveller.

A.K.A. what's the story behind choosing your handle?

Mine dates back to Y2K when I got my first desktop with internet capabilities. Well, not my first desktop as that would have been my old 386 but rather my first foray onto the internet on a later model computer, if Windows ME can be considered "better" (rolling my eyes).
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

Andy over at SF-UN yahoo group posted this analysis of the US Navy's Enterprise vs Captian Kirk's Enterprise
    http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/12/24/enterprise_vs_enterprise#.UNh5LdQZXC8.facebook

its an interesting comparison and I found the conclusions interesting as well.

Holiday wishes to one and all, what ever the holiday observed by your species.

BTW It suddenly occured to me that the (I thought it was called this have to look for sure when I get back to
Boston) -Founders Day to celebrate the Founding of the UPF would actually be the same as our New Years Day. In fact since it celebrates the founding of the UPF and happens on the first day of the new year you can expect that the denziens of the Frontier are a little bit nostolgic and thinking about resolutions or plans for the coming year.

Leaving aside mechanics issues as I happen to think that AD mechanics are pretty fast play for combat already, I'm considering how to craft an old school/ early D&D style adventure for SF.

From reading Matt Finch's old school primer
    http://www.lulu.com/us/en/shop/matthew-finch/quick-primer-for-old-school-gaming/ebook/product-3159558.html

Resource management seems to be key. Also the situation should be about do we push ahead with low resources as opposed to pulling back.

So this old thread popped into my head:

Modern/commercial RPG adventures are very much in the vein of the revolution that Tracy and Laura Hickman started. Since RPG publishers are often market driven the idea of sequel upon sequel to sell to their customer base has become a siren call that few publishers resist.

Studying the revolution its seems that most of the internet chatter concerning the Hickman Revolution stems from this blog post, it seems everyone sites this one blog:

Posing a question about the type of gamer you are: do you old school, new school or use spoon fred drool?

Old school is pretty much the locale and plot format of the early D&D modules that left the "story" to be made up by the DMs and players playing them and typically these modules got played more than once or had great potential to be played more than once. Its a very Gygaxian model and Dwellers of the Forbidden City is one of the classics of this.
