By the criteria laid out for this project there are no sathar in the setting yet, though they certainly exist

What might be interesting is

A. crafting a alien foil that can be used in place of the sathar and dealt with so as to not change the complexion of the game latter on.

Perhaps the zuthra, perhaps something else, perhaps the aliens xenomorphs

B. craft a module or campaign that leads the sathar to discover the Frontier and leads directly to their visitation of Truane's Star.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I was thinking of dropping hints of an alien race that visited this area many years ago. Perhaps there are more obelisks in the northern stars beyond the yet-to-be-named system Volturnus.

I'd not use the Zethra.  They are listed as of unknown origin and motive.  They are rare and enigmatic.  I like the idea of a pre-Sathar foil but I think they should be local and contained by the time Sathar show up.  This could give the frontier populous the feeling that all threats can be dealt with and brought to the table with sufficient agreements.

Likely this race can not be a major star faring race because they would then be placed on the map and potentially playable.  Rather I think these are a race discovered on one of the frontier worlds that quickly spreads or goes aggressive when void travel is given to them.  This race was embraced then turned aggressive with it's new found powers.  Potentially even, this race degenerated into war within and solved the frontier's problem with them all by themselves.  Now all that is left of them is a broken people that needs a century or two to recover and become equal in status to the core four.

I only like the zethra for the fact that their impact on the setting is light and thus the can show up, wreck havoc and be contained without fundamental changes to the exerting. The aliens xenomorphs are good for this too though potentially more deadly.

The sathar have been around for a long time, in the very long past they may have seeded the northern part of the frontier map with obelisks. Just waiting to be found by adventurers.

What if a primitive tribe was found on a world, their carvings indicated "worms form the sky", the characters wouldn't know specifics, but would have a clue to what happened. Of course the players would know right-away if they are familiar with SF.

I'm trying to determine how to keep the sathar around without giving too much away which should lead up to SWI and the First Common Muster.

How to resolve the following;
  • Enora extinction: When? Why did sathar not exploit more of the frontier? They certainly had the time but maybe not the resources.
  • Red Devil pirates not setting off obelisks, however the Truane's Star Express does. Based on Hull size? FTL too close to the system?
  • When did Clan Y show up in FS30? Why from this direction where other sathar found Volturnus.
