Star Frontiers using D20 variant rules

A while back, before I discovered this incredible site, I was forced to do the unthinkable, recreate my Star Frontiers homebrew system to a variant of the D20 rules that I had created for my own D&D game because being an old school RPGer I hated that WOTC had made miniatures so much a part of D&D and both myself and my gaming group detest miniatures, because in our oppinion they take away from the fun of visualizing a great adventure. Anyway getting back to the topic at hand, After a great deal of work my rules set is at the playable stage (The Players guide clocking in at about 210 pages). Now I was wondering if anyone else had similarly created or is playing a variant Star Frontiers game using the D20 or D20 Future rules? How do you like it compared to classic Star Frontier's? And most importantly If I decide to post some of my material (like some of the aliens in my game) should I post them using my D20 variant stats, or would you prefer I find my original Star Frontier's versions and post them using the classic Star frontier's Stats?

Very cool.  But is your system much different from D20 future?

Yes it is. There are no classes, only a hero system which gives the details for heroes advancing in level. Combat points are gained per level which can be distributed among areas of combat (initiative, chance to hit, damage, or the character's defense rating. Characters buy skills to help define his/her abilities, and all the feats have been rewritten, and some are no longer feats but merits and flaws. Endurance points are based on combining attribute modifiers to Stamina + a modifier per level, and characters have a psyche score based on their intuition modifier. Also the core system has been adapted for several other campaign models (Gamma world, Modern fantasy, etc) allowing for great cross over adventures. And that's just a small amount of what I devised for the system.

Both stats would work although if you deviate from d20 you might have to explain the differences. If you submit a race in d20 format to the magazine make sure the SF stats are there as well. :-)

If I post anything or submit anything, I'll try my best to revert it to classic SF, to make things easier on everyone.

I personaly would love to see your system just the way you wrote it. Any plans to publish it any where? Port loren library is looking for the Dryn_Rys original. It would fit nicely next to the Dragon Mag articles.

Depending on the size it would hurt to submit to the magazine. We might attract others to the SF universe by providing another rule-set.

Anyone have a 4e conversion? Innocent

The generic rules set, without the Star frontiers material clocks in at 137 pages for the Players rules, The Administrators guide adds another 57 pages, and the expanded guide (unfinished but playable ) is 112 pages. but when I add the Star Frontiers components the core books become players guide (222 pages), administrator's guide (151 and counting), Expanded universe guide (181 and counting), and Knighthawks 116 (and counting) and that's not counting the various Zeb guides, the animal guide is 144 pages itself (That's finished by the way), though the page counts would chance once everything is completed and I get someone to do the type setting, etc.

Of course if I ever complete the project I intend to have at least four creature guides (Zebs guides to creatures of the Frontier), A completed Zebs guide to races beyond the frontier, A Zebs guide to vehicles, another for robots, and one for Frontier worlds, and a few books with pregenerated heroes and villains for the Star Frontier's setting, and a few adventures too. (I know it sounds like a lot, but it's 2+ decades worth of material that have been created or adapted from various sources and lovingly crafted into a working rules set ), and I also have similar rules sets for Gamma world, Sword & Sorcery (my D&D variant rules), Shadows (a game of modern horror) and a few other game systems which are all based off of that core set of rules.

I've kept very busy since my gaming group disbanded seven years ago (energy that was expended on creating adventures, was chanelled into creating or adapting rules). which is why I was thrilled beyond words when I discovered this site because I knew that there were others out there like me who have a passion for not just old school RPG's but for game development.

I believe Deryn is out of touch in another area of the Frontier. Not sure about his return date.

I returned to the Frontier today, and in a few days I'll start reopening folders and starting to move forward on the work. On the Star Frontiers (URS) project there is already the 4 core rule books for download (Core book, Administrators guide, Knighthawks, and Expanded Universe rulebook), and an introductory module.

Current projects on the slate are to finish the first of the Zebulons guides to the Frontier which will detail the core worlds of the expanded Frontier, and try to finish the two volume Zebulons guide to animals of the Frontier.

Beyond that I think there is a list of Zebs guides somewhere on the Star Frontiers (URS) project's forum.

The materials that are finished are free for the taking to members of the Project so if you havent joined the group feel free to send a request, I'm always looking for members and fresh minds bring fresh perspectives, so come join in the fun.

Arclight just go to the Project page below and request membership, and I'll confirm it.

Oh and as a quick update, the rule set that is now available is version 4.5 of these rules, and there is also a 36 or so page introductory module that hopefully will provide a few hours of distraction to anyone who wants to take the game out for a spin. i'm currently about half way through the zebulons guide to the Frontier: the Core Worlds which should run about 250 or so pages of information detailing the inhabited worlds of the Core as well as details concerning the many races and the major Space stations/Fortresses in that region of space.

I'm also hoping to at some point release a two volume Zebulon's Guide to animals of the Frontier, which should have several dozen creatures for Administrators looking to add something to their adventures in the Expanded Frontier.
