Conversion Focus

Last night, I was thinking about how conversions should take place. It occurred to me that the focus should be more on advice on converting. If there is anything that can be converted straight across, then we should do that, but for things where it's a matter of splitting hairs, we should help the player/GM/Referee determine how hairs should be split.

There's also the possibility that it may be necessary to provide two sets of conversion rules: one for converting to d20 and one for converting to d100.

I discovered providing sample conversions is the best way.

Agreed.

Simple conversions work well for such things as attribute bonuses, but for other things Such as weapon or creature attack damage here's a simple solution, divide maximum damage that a weapon or creature attack by 5 and find the appropriate die, so that a weapon or creature attack that causes 4-40 points of damage in Star frontiers would cause 4d8 in the d20 system. The proportunate damage compared to the average character should be about right.

Thanks, Deryn. Would that be because of the modifier madness in the d20 system and the lack thereof in Star Frontiers.

I'm thinking of the average Star Frontier's character having a 45 Stamina which is the same as a first level character in D&D with 9 hit points. so an attack that does 1-40 points in Star Frontiers would be like doing 1d8 points of damage in D&D which comes out about right.

D&D did go a little modifier crazy didn't it?

There's something to say about the simplicity of pre 3rd edition game mechanics like AD&D, basic D&D, and Star Frontiers. I think that the best thing to do in any conversion is try to keep conversions as simple as possible, and what worked for me was to strip the d20 rules to the core mechanics, and rebuild it from there. The core mechanics being...

10 + attribute modifier + circumstance modifier vs difficulty
d20 + attribute modifier + circumstance modifier vs difficulty

Then you just keep the circumstance modifiers from bogging down the game by making the circumstance modifiers broad in scope to cover most circumstances without having to many of them, and if all else fails a circumstance modifier of +2/-2 will always suffice.

Everything else should be built up from there. I hope that helps.

Yeah, stripping it down to its most basic mechanics was the conclusion I came to too.
