As a follow-up, perhaps I'm not understanding something... but appending "#new" to the What's New links would make reading new material so much easier.  Heck, I can manually add it to every link by right clicking, copy link location, paste the link into a new browser window, and then add "#new" to the end of the link, and "Voila!" I'm directed right to the new posts instead of being sent to beginning of the new post and having to go looking for the new activity.

What exactly is the value in being directed the way we are, when there is a perfectly wonderful ability to go directly to the new material with "#new" being added to the links?
