Refer to: Ancient Races.

Are the Mechanon truly Ancient?  Seems to me they're an engineered race...

Well they pre-date any of the other races. Because they were created by the Eorna and when the Eorna truely vanished that would leave the Mechanon. Since this was before the Frontier (and probably before most of the races began advancing) they gained their "sentience" which in turn made them a race and an ancient one at that.

**Hopefully my explanation made sense.

I was looking at the Frontier Timeline from Zebs...

10,500 pf. (Pre-Frontier) Last remnants of the mysterious Tetrach Societies die out.
950 pf. Heliopes left on starmist by Clikks after a Clikk military exploration vessel is forced to jettison unnecessary cargo.
800 pf. The evolution of the Mechanon race begins on Volturnus.
410 pf. First Vrusk/Dralasite contact.
350 pf. First Vrusk/Human contact
302 pf. Fromeltar system discovered by Dralasites.
300 pf. Vrusk, Dralasites, and Humans meet for the first time on the Frontier.
299 pf. Theseus system discovered by Humans.
270 pf. Yazirians enter the Frontier.
270-4 pf. The Frontier is founded.

So yeah - the Mechanon evolve into a race long before the first space contact occurs - but not necessarily before the other races themselves evolve.  I assume that the Vrusk, for example, had centuries of evolution before they became starfaring, but only 390 years are specified as the time between the beginning of Mechanon evolution and the first contact vetween the Vrusk and the Dralasite.  So yes, Mechanon were created by a race I might call Ancient - but are they, themselves, ancient?  I'm dunno.  I'm just bringing up a point for dialogue, not really stating an opinion.  I could go either way on this.

Does evolution apply when it comes to machines?

Or is sentience just an upgrade to them?

In Greece, what constituted an "ancient" religion was one that had been around for over a thousand years. An exception was made for Christianity to end the division that was tearing the Empire apart from the inside. Should what constitutes an "ancient" alien race also be counted as only older than 1,000 years? Thus, the Mechanon would only be considered ancient at 1,000 years (201 f.y.).
