As usual I have to do everything the hard way and have started a huge 5E project while learning 5E.

So WotC no longer supports World of Greyhawk, but moved all they could to Forgotten Realms... so WoG used to have FR as a conitent and the Oriental Advenrures Kara-Tur was also some place on Oerth, but now Forgotten Realms is its own world containing places like Kara-Tur. In addition there was the Legends of the Five Rings supplement wihich is an oriental based supplement.

I am going to use the oriental supplements to create a world with that feel. I already have created some draft mythology specifics like how the first Dwarf God came into existence, that Ioun is a Jade Maiden, Nuwa is an earth Goddess... and so on.

We decided that locally the two main human races are the Kohm and Yang... yes Star Trek reference. Anyway as I get things nailed down I will post in documents and discuss...

I have started to reread the old Dragon Mags.

Project IOUN Stones...
So I started researching these as they are in SR no. 4, and in a Dragon magazine as well and now last time I looked up to 600 different ones on the net. First it is funny all the Jack Vance fans who know nothing about D&D history can't figure out why Jack didn't sue Gary, he gave Gary permission to use the name, he clearly had a hand in the magic system of "fire and forget", and Vecna is named after him.... anyway J. Vance's ideas about the stones is that they come from dead stars being sliced away at by the Nothing at the edge of the universe... they are collected at great risk by Archveults, described  as 7 foot tall blue scaled black feathered humanoids, supossably a once ruling class of human mages run off of dying earth... anyhow these naturally occurring stones are of enormous magical value, highly prized and jealously guarded magic. Now there are new ideas in D&D about their creation, including another magical natural one with planes mixing if you will.... then of course there are various ideas about so and so invented a way to make magic stones...the original stones spin around your head and are small plum sized though of different shapes. In modern D&D as best I can tell the spinning aspect has been dropped in favor of set in jewelry or something.... which I don't like, IOUNs need to spin around the head. The idea of magic stones, jewels is not new so What I think has happened is they got all lumped together at some point by players, DMs and latter game designers In addition a new Goddess has been made  to explain the stones, so in thinking about the lore if you will I think I will create classes of magic stones but the IOUNs are the cool rare ones. The IOUNs work when moving, so the other types are different as they don't need to spin, a different sort of magic is involved with them.

Anyway IOUN the goddess will be a Jade Maiden Kami in my setting... I think Vance's creation story works really well with Legend Of The Five Rings, but I also like the idea of the mineral plane tossing these things out from time to time in that plane.

My main problem is considering how to present the stones... the original JV version mainly absorbs magic attacks. The first article for D&D added ability bonuses and level casting perks. I also have to consider other magical stones from TLOFR.... crystal, obsidian and Jade have special powers. At any rate I will come up with rules on these things so the various types of stones are unique.
