TERA GEN Labs LLC suddenly appeared in the Frontier with no known affiliation to any mega corp but with the funding beyond what you'd expect in a new start up. They established a secret lab outside of the frontier. It had offices and labs on Minotaur and a headquarters at Gran Quivera. 4 starships were registered to the company.

The company did cutting edge genetic research and had filed some patents for cutting edge Trans species genetic engineering.

25 years after its first appearance in the Frontier the company imploded. Staff were played off, some died under mysterious circumstances, CEO Mar Fan Ree disappeared, Star ship crews disappeared and some of the Ships turned up sold to scrap yards.

EDIT: changed name from colony to outpost. its not really an colony

So the long and short is the chief genetists was a sathar agent. He was discovered by Star Law and the CEO realizing he's been an unwitting pawn in a sathar plot instituted the scroched earth program liquidating TERA GENs holding and accounts and slipped away. He is wanted for questioning by Star Law.

The vimh were created in part with sathar tech and represent genetic engineering orders of magnitude over the state of the art in the Frontier. The abandonment of the secret lab included Shiva protocols. The robotic brain has not completed these protocols:

Protocol 1) eliminate all staff (there may be 1-2 survivors)
Protocol 2) eliminate test subjects (vimh)
Protocol 3) destroy facility bomb of some sort could even be a low yield nuke

The robotic brain either through a desire for self preservation or corrupted functions has decided to complete testing on the test subjects before it can complete the Shiva protocols. PCs showing up could find themselves interpreted as potential test subjects or as staff.

Colony should be large and a dungeon crawl potential may be worth exploring.

Rather than pick a new Star and detail a new planet theclab is located on dinosaur planet detailed in a SFman issue way back. This give you some deadly fauna to deal with. Robotic minions of the labs computer brain, some 1-2 staff members who managed to survive the staff purge and one has somecscrews loose. The other put herself into a freeze field or journey class cold sleeper birth with a power supply hoping for rescue in the future and then there is the vimh faction. Could even be a team of sathar agents looking for the lost outpost.

Starting the adventure.

Star Law or Royal Marines investigation.

or simply characters ship happen to be in system for whatever reason and happen to spot the facility on the ground.

alternately, you meet in a spacer bar and a spacer offers to sell you a file computer with data on it indicating a ruined facility on a planet. Who knows what could be there and at a 1000 credits this could be a bargin treasure map.

Sathar scout ship and the sathar agent geneticist show up in a scout ship with a file computer with the same data on it as was sold to the PCs. The geneticist assumed that the robotic brain running the base had followed through on the Shive protocols but this "treasure map" clearly shows that the final protocol, blow up the base has not been implimented. Thus the agent and his sathar handlers and some other subborned mercenaries show up mid way to late in the adventure looking to grab samples (some vimh) and records and finish the job of blowing the place up.

Note to self: do sathar scout ships have VIRTOL? Do I simply recycle the known sathar scoutship deck plan or redraw it for this adventure since it will carry more than 2 occupants? 1 sathar 4 sathar agents 3 sathar combat robots

The Player characters:

If this is a star law adventure then its reasonable to use the dragon article on creating a star law PC which does create a capable mid to high-ish level SF character.

If this is an option it should be an option for all PCs even if not a star law marshal.

Ah! The planet of Torrent. I loved that brief though I could never figure where to place it. It was one lacking a system name or any brief on what else the star system might contain. Your idea is a great way to expand on that information.

Funny you bring this up. The delve encounters I was working up are a trigger for a vimh dawn adventure and without even consulting this material the lost NuGen lab is on Torrent. The delve encounter I wrote is simply the catalyst to send the PCs looking for the mysterious lost NuGen lab.

I'm a little inspired by by Reading Castle Ravenloft module for the first time.

What if the robotic brain had random objectives  concerning the PCs? Diced for instead of the card mechanic in Ravenloft.

1. Use PCs as test subjects
2. Treat them as staff- ultimately it must kill them but may use them first.
3. Invading outsiders- follow facility security measures: subdue and capture and hold for interrogation. It may decide to do the interrogation itself.
4. Treat as corporate contact/official either from defunct corporation or from another corp- evaluating for a merger.
5. Ignore? Not sure of this one maybe ignore but the robotic brain is talking to itself over intercoms carrying on a running narrative.
6. treat as new staff but not implementing Shiva protocols IE it tries to put them to work.
7.?

Obviously a 10 item list would be cool but a d6 list will work too.
