Working on an adventure

I'm writing up an adventure to play over the next few sessions with my group. We played through "Bugs in the System" and are proceeding on to the next 'mission' in the campaign.

As some background, the characters are employees of the Cassadine Development Corporation, part of the "Security and Special Operations" team. They act as troubleshooters in difficult situations, security on colony worlds and orbital installations, and sometimes intelligence operatives, gathering intel on the actions of other megacorps in their regional sector of space.

In this adventure, the characters are to accompany a trade delegation to the planet Traxsis IV, acting as security for a negotiation effort with an alien race (the Ul-Mor). The Ul-Mor tribes dwell in close proximity to some valuable mineral deposits, and the CDC is working to negotiate mining rights from the 'primitives'. (As a side-note, I tend to 'borrow' SF adventure material liberally and mold it in to the campaign, rather than use the adventures whole-sale).

Traxsis IV is an arid colony world managed by the CDC. There is one colony (Slarkor Beta) with a population of about 250 humans. Think a less developed Mos Eisley.

I've sketched a rough plan to the adventure:
  • The PCs arrive and will have dinner with the colony's manager. (Information about the planet and region given).
  • The PCs spend some time in Slarkor Beta talking with planetary survey members (More info).
  • There are undercover Streel operatives at Slarkor Beta - and one in the delegation group - that are looking to disrupt the trade negotations, or otherwise stymie the CDC's efforts on the planet.
  • The journey to the Ul-Mor's tribal lands will be on hover vehicles and bikes. Alien predators (sand sharks, winged rippers) may be encountered during the journey or once the PCs approach the tribal lands. (The hover transports won't be able to make the whole journey as the terrain gets rougher and the elevation increases).
  • The Streel operatives will stage a firefight, while their undercover operative attempts to murder one of the Ul-Mor tribesmen to spoil the negotiations.
  • The Ul-Mor will be quite upset however things turn out with the assassination attempt, and be rather distrustful at that point with the delegates.
  • Leading to: trust being regained if the PCs elect to 'become one with the Ul-Mor' by fighting a QuickDeath.

I'd welcome any input on challenges to present to the players. Alien fauna encounters, skill challenges, etc. Thanks!

Sounds good, you could also toss in the hook that the miners/ and or manager are doing something not good either intentionally or unintentionally that might need to be resolved/halted. Star Trek TOS were the horta (rock creature) started killing miners who were unintentionally killing her eggs the one that gave us the line, "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a brick layer." The adventure as you described is much like a TOS episode were the klingons are being the fly in the ointment in the negotiations with the primitives over dilithium crystal mining rights.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Sounds like you could also use a Capellan Free Merchant / ferrengi type trading and buying stuff. Perhaps even a smuggling ring stealing artifacts from ul-mor grave sites and shipping them off planet.

I like the sort of sand box approach that you are taking but adding in SF elements. You named a group of Volturnus animals that are among the better samples from Volturnian zoology and then included the quickdeath which is sathar in origin.

It begs the question of whether the sathar are in you setting? and did they visit this planet or is the quickdeath simply recast as a volturnian creature?

I haven't introduced the Sathar in this campaign, and I'm not sure it's going to happen. The QuickDeath is a recast beast/apex-predator that just serves a tough challenge for the party to face. Its appearance will likely be changed so that it isn't as linked to bio-genetic engineering.
