The Hepplewhite ship

Admittedly the ship is a pre KH and un-KHs deckplan. Without checking its length against the chart in KHs I lean toward calling it HS 3 non military design just based on the two enginges. I need to take another look but I believe there was just three yazirian bodies found which would translate to pilot, astrogator and engineer. Perhaps the ship is a pre Yazirian Star Exodus scout design built to seek out a new home for yazirian civiliaztion. Its extremely out dated despite new engines. And usually operates at 1/4 or less ADF due to the outdated horizontal deck layout. Its story is a small clan bought it in an endeavor to create a future for the clan in shipping.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Just did a careful read thru and it has landing gear in area J which is presumably the same for the mirrored but unlettered area of the same shape.

so its horizontal layout makes a lot of sense the with retractible landing gear.

I'm also trying to interpret the two stairs down and one stair up at the back with the written discriptions and the best I can come up with is that its a double deck cargo hold and the lower one was where the bomb was.

Alright here are some cannon ship miniatures that sort of match the horizontal deck plan of the hepplewhite ship (bottom row and two on the left)

These seem to match the two engine pods up and cargo hold beneath and general horizontal layout with flight deck up front. These miniatures are perhaps thin and narrow but they match the hepplewhite in general configuration. I think some artwork of the Hepplewhite showing more wing surface will nicely match the AD book map as well as these miniatures. (I particularly like the middle ship in the bottom row as a base inspiration for the hepplewhite)

What this seems to be shaping up to be is a short ranged shuttle type craft, possible to use it for interstellar jumps but clearly designed for in system hops.

Metagaming here. The adventure was written before they had any idea of starship rules. To include horizontal ship designs for this adventure means including them in the SF universe even though KH sorta eliminated them. Would it be easier to change the Hepplewhite ship or change how we do ships in the SF universe?
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Yes and no- small ships can get by with horizontal decks to which I would not make this more than a HS3 ship simply used with restrictions

I would be inclined to call it a shuttle or drop ship and the host ship is still in orbit, with even more mysteries abound.

Bottom row right spaceshipp is good (from pic) and call it Merchant Ship - like the Fair Trader (HS: 4). It would be HS: 2 or 3. You could give it chemical engines like the Fair Trader or Atomics but, it needs an overhaul every time. It has the crew quarters. Just make the crew quarters with double beds. This would work with the two crewmen below and the two found with the Rippers. And it supports the Rhinny is a runaway theory.

A - Entry Lock
B - The Cockpit - Human (Pilot ?)
C - Cabin
D - Cabin
E - Storage
F - Rear Hatch
G - Engine Pod - Yazirian (Engineer ?)
H - Cargo Hold
I - Service Passage
J - Wheel Well - Rhinny

I just counted out the squares on the ship map and there are around 30. So what is the scale of each square?

At 1 m per square the ship is 30m length making it HS2
At 2 m per square the ship is 60 m length making it a big HS3 or small HS4
At 3 m per square the ship is 90 m length making it a very big HS4 or small HS 5

All can land on a planet but the map of the ship does not compare well to a frigate sized ship so I would not go with a HS 5 ship

I would lean toward 2m/square and a HS3 ship for the Hepplewhite. The feel of the map is that its possibly too small for HS2 but about right for HS3

The AD discription of the engine pods states oil and acid are dripping in pools and a chance of fire where the remaining fuel will run the chance of exploding in 2 minutes- that suggests chemical rockets for this ship thus its purely a system ship ferrying cargo between the planet surface and interstellar freighters in orbit.

I like the Traveller 1.5m squares, that puts it at a solid HS:3.

That works too and when I look at the map in AD it just feels like it should be HS3.

I'm starting to feel like the ship needs nose art.

I like that you got rid of the confusing stairs at the cargo hold/engineering area

Yep, easily replaced with maintenance access panels in the hold. Wink

I like this.  I can identify most items on the deck.  I can deduce the function of each of the rooms.  What is the blue thing that looks like a female symbol on its side?

That would be the life support equipment. Probably a lot larger than it needs to be...I still have a few tweas to do on this.

I think this ship should have a cargo access hatch. If it has wheel wells and lands then it's got a ramp.

Probably should address that in the re envisioning of the sample adventure. Referee hand wave fiat works: it's broke from crash and doesn't open. Of course if they did open it then the space cockroach slime bug could get out and infest Volturnus as an invasive species.

Note the broken line between the chem-thrusters, that's a fold-down ramp/hatch.

Once I post key it will make more sense. ;)

I should reiterate --- the broken line going wast/west is the cargo hatch/ramp, not the dashed lines running north/south...the latter is the ceiling via sloped bulkheads.
