Each clan has a different technological focus; clan x is attack monsters and clan y os fighter craft ; the Ares article on von neuman machines would suggest a clan z with robotic emphasis.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I"m imagining the source of this as each clan controls a different segment of sathar industry. Trade and exchange go on between the clans but equally competition to be the top clan goes on even resulting in blood letting. This may have been inherited from the days of their rebellion from the clikk where each proto-clan gained control of a segment of the klikk industrial base. The natural tendency for these clans is kingdom building and overtime each clan has sought to extend its kingdom by developing a planet/base that belongs to it solely. Thus it would seem that clan y borders the east of the frontier and clan x must be somewhere close to the rim. The original klikk world that was the sight of the sathar's rebellion to the klikk is a sort of capitol where sathar politics gets played out. All sathar pretty much have the same tech base but each clan seeks to distinguish itself through excelling in one area. If another clan attempts to match that clan in that area its tantamount to declaring clan war. This has only happened once or twice and the unwritten rule is to not do this. At the capitol some trade and exchange goes on but mostly confederations of clans group together under a dominant clan and go to war against prey/slave species. If a campaign fails the dominant clan can find itself taken down in status and a rival replaces it. When this happens upper caste sathar within the fallen clan sometimes make a move to take over the clan and lobotomies will happme to the loser.

In addition each clan seeks to develop a slave/client species as part of the one upsmanship that goes on. This too is a hold over from the klikk. Its also the reason that no sathar group developed Voltirnus; the council of clans at the capitol carefully watches each other and anyone appearing to gain to much advantage will find his clan the target of a coalition. So in the case of Voltirnus the eorna were wiped out and a listening post emplaced to monitor the fallow status of that world; any world that appears too rich in natural resources that falls within sathar control is usually declared fallow to prevent anyone clan from gaining to great of an advantage.
