My impression of the Wild Wild West TV series is more of a James Bond meets Gun Smoke with some pretensions of serious drama

My impression of the movie is that it went for more cheese in its presentation.

Point is what tone to strike

a lot of steam punk war games that have come out recently do things like fielding balloons with a steam engine on it- which is just silly. or American Civil War "jump Troops" which are ACW soldiers with a steam tank and smoke stack strapped to their back- not my cup of tea but then I'd allow a walker device and I'm sure someone with an engineering back ground could pick it apart as to why it would not be able to move the way its designed.

None the less some people like the stuff I dont like so I'm trying to conceptualize the proper tone to set for steam punk Wild Wild West sort of stuff?

Not sure where to begin with that? High Dawn is your project so whether you want steam punk stuff in it or not is kind of up to you. However, if you are going to have cowboys and aliens (Forgive the movie title insertion) it is inevitable that technology contamination will occur. Those living in the wild west environment are bound to get or copy technology from their alien visitors.

actually I plan to write a set of Boot Hill rules in AD mechanic so that you could do a straight Boot Hill game

but sinces its AD mechanic it will be very simple to throw in "tech" so if someone wanted to play a more steam punk kind of game then they could.

Captain Nemo had an atomic powered submarine, a century before Einstein and Bose sat down for a tea. Steam Punk Classic.
I agree some of it is far fetched fantasy, but with aliens around..... Brisco County Jr.

Your take on WWW Series and movie are about right. (though Bond wasn't the model the producers used, close enough.)

The War Zeppelin is however as iconic as the Nautalus, to the late steampunk fans, largely due to Moorcocks - 'The Warlord of the Air', and some flight sim I can't remember the name of, that sold it to all the console-kids.

Still it isn't quite as bad as a two-way lunar trip, in a giant hollow cannon shell. (Le Voyage Dans La Lune).
Oh humans!! Innocent We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?".

if you square a cube does it become an octoid?
