Yet another post started by the jedion but I really need ideas from you all on this one

we're gonna need ranks and insignia for various organizations in the Rim

the Flight- needs and insignia and rank names for officers and enlisted

CFM needs insignia and a few ranks (shouldn't have as many as a formal military) purhaps the ranks are just captain, 1st officer, spacer etc. but we should deffinetly have an insignia

Humma Houses- symbols that double as insignia
general ranks that evolved out of their feudal past

another thread (http://starfrontiers.us/node/4496) is bashing out what we call the other branches of the Rim's military so stuff from that may end up here and need to be worked on.

its highly likely that the planets in the rim that were colonized by all three races will use ranks borrowed from the Flight for their home grown militaries. the two stand out systems will be the Capella system and the Fockrik system IMO

I could see the ifshnit developing a title that is translated "Captain" but in the evolution of that title came the "Captain of the Seas" which is a step above captain (commodore or rear admiral) then there is the "Captain of the Oceans" a step above that (highest level of admiral for ifshnit wet water navies) when the eventually ventured to the stars and the CFM evolved they kept captain but added  "captian of the stars" and "captian of the void" which were essentially CFM captains that rose to the place of opperating fleets of trading vessels.

The humma titles should be rooted in the feudal past somehow.

Osakar probably follow the Flights rank titles

Will I particularly like the Squadron Master through Flight master ranks , I presume that the 2 ship master ranks corespond to captain and captain junior grade.

do you think calling an astrogator or engineer a  pilot will work?
I Like the captain ranks but the senior command ranks I like alot- they sound cool. the pilot ranks seem off to me.

what do you think of substituting tallon for offcier in the enlist rank list (it picks up the flight/bird motiff and while the officer might be the head its the enlisted who get the work done hence the name tallon): Spacer, Sub-tallon, Cheif Tallon, Senior Tallon, Senior Tallon of the Flight (I've ommitted 1st thru 3 grade for space)

ACK, DAMNIT!

I forgot to add the asterisked text:

*or Engineer, Astrogator, etc.

Talon for officer is perfect. Your enlisted rank structure makes for a more streamlined easier to remember progression, excellent all around.

The two ship master ranks correspond to captain and captain junior grade, or, in the Russian Navy, Captain 2d Rank and Captain 1st Rank.

Alright i understand what you were doing with pilot and it suggests that all starship skills Astrogation, Rocket Gunner, Beam Gunner, and Engineer can attain to Captian rank or Shipmaster after progressing through apprentice to major. This is cool.

Naturally enough certain carreer tracks will be more favored for being awarded higher rank like pilot and gunners might have a harder time progressing to higher command rank without cross training for one level of pilot at least.

Yeah.

I figured it this way: The Flight, having been spun off from the CFM, would favor pilots and astrogators over engineers and gunners, just as modern merchant marines favor those officers with deck licenses(shiphandlers/bridge officers) over engineers for captaincies.
