After some thought about what w00t said about whether or not you needed a d20 based book to understand the dice concepts I started thinking, that I had assumed that when I created/modified this system, since it was really originally supposed to be detailing my homerules for my son and my gaming group.

So I started thinking that since the community here bases their play largely on the original SF rules that perhaps I should create an alternate version of the game, as a supplement to the SF rules. After all the races are going to be recreated and submitted to another project as it is, and the creatures are also being slowly reworked for another project here as well, so why not look through the gobs of material I wrote, and take the best parts and rewrite them based on classic SF as an alternative system thus increasing the potential use of my material.

It would double my workload for a few weeks but I think you guys are worth the added effort. I won't be abandoning the original project, but I think I can increase the interest in the project if I can offer it both as a new system, and as an expansion of Classic SF. so what do you guys think about doing that?

And don't worry w00t I'll add a table of contents and pictures (mostly from the classic Sf stuff) for you too. Laughing

As I sit here starting to think of ways to make this project better I started thinking about what w00t said about the size of the rule books, and I started thinking that perhaps I should take advantage of restructuring the rules to make the core books smaller. I think that maybe I should take out everything but the essential rules for playing the game (what I consider the most important races, the rules for character generation, skills, feats, combat and other important rules) and give enough equipment to get the game started and put the optional rules (Robots, vehicles, cybernetics etc) into their respective Zebs guide. This would free up more pages which I could use as needed to clarify rules and add missing game mechanics for those not familiar with the d20 system.

I think that this might help make these rules more user friendly, and might be closer to what I think TSR wanted to do with Zeb's guide but never got a chance to do it. So what do you guys think about this approach?

Couple suggestions;
  1. Use "A Skilled Frontier" by Bill Logan. Most of us prefer this rule set over the original AD rules. Plus it would be a lot easier to convert from d20 to Skilled Frontier.
  2. Divorce the rules from the setting. Publish a "Core book" that covers things like; creating a character, equipment (personal, vehicles, ships), optional creation rules, etc. Then publish a setting book, "Your Name Here" that covers; star map, races, corporations, organizations, etc.

I posted a preview of the new direction that version 4.5 of the core rules to the d20 based version of the rules will look like. Tell me if this works for everyone okay?

I'll be reworking the d20 version at the same time as I adapt the d20 version to classic SF so bear with me okay.

They look pretty nice.  You might look at making the shadow a gray instead of black.  I know people like to print these things and the less extra ink the better.  We've had that comment many times about the Star Frontiersman issues. Smile

I think for the Classic Star Frontiers version I'm going to just state that Alpha Dawn and Knighthawks will be required so I don't have to rewrite the rules we all love. I will however adapt the stuff from the Zebs guide that we like to standard AD unless someone's already done this and I either don't know about it, or am drawing a blank on where it can be found.
